In the heart of Christian life lies the call to serve, a call rooted deeply in the teachings of the Bible. Jesus Christ Himself set the ultimate example of service, as He declared, “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many” (Mark 10:45). This profound statement underscores the essence of our calling as followers of Christ.
The Apostle Paul, in his letter to the Galatians, emphasizes this call further: “For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another” (Galatians 5:13). Here, Paul reminds us that our liberty in Christ is not for self-indulgence but for selfless service to others, reflecting the love and grace we have received.
In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus teaches about the nature of true greatness in His Kingdom: “The greatest among you will1 be your servant” (Matthew 23:11). This teaching flips worldly notions of power and prestige, highlighting that true honor comes from humble service. In serving others, we mirror Christ’s humility and love, drawing closer to His likeness.
The story of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37) vividly illustrates what it means to be called to serve. Despite cultural and religious differences, the Samaritan stopped to help a wounded stranger, embodying compassion and mercy. Jesus concludes this parable with a clear directive: “Go and do likewise” (Luke 10:37). We are called to extend our hands to those in need, irrespective of their background, and to serve with a heart of kindness and empathy.
The Book of James challenges us to demonstrate our faith through actions: “What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him?” (James 2:14). Faith without service is incomplete, for our actions reflect the transformative power of God’s love in our lives. By serving others, we live out the faith we profess, making it tangible and impactful.
Our call to serve is not just a directive but a profound privilege. It is an opportunity to follow in the footsteps of Jesus, to embody His teachings, and to spread His love through our actions. As we serve, let us be reminded of the words of 1 Peter 4:10: “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.” May we answer this call with joy and dedication, knowing that in serving others, we are serving our Lord.
